viber : the future

Viber, the popular instant messaging and voice app, expects to double its India subscriber base by the end of 2014, from the 17 million now, driven by opportunities from surging smartphone sales, says country head Anubhav Nayyar.
In an email interview with ET, Nayyar said that the app maker won't be changing any of its basic services post its acquisition by Japanese Internet company Rakuten.
He added that the app, which has already seen 300 million downloads globally, will focus on its paid Stickers and voicecall features for revenue, but won't advertise on the app.
" We do not want to plaster our users with advertisements."

The alternative to skype

Viber is an app for smartphones that allows friends to contact one another. It attempts to be a phone replacement by allowing you to communicate through the app, even if friends aren't using it. Now Viber has released on PC and Mac, but it still requires a smartphone account before you can use it. By using 3G or WiFi, you can communicate through messages or VoIP calls for free with friends who use the app .
But the release of Viber on PC and Mac signals its entry into the domain of Skype, arguably the king of VoIP calls on PC, Mac, and smartphones. With Microsoft's acquisition of Skype, it acts as the replacement of Windows Live Messenger and will add millions of users. Viber was primarily a smartphone app and is only now being offered on desktops with its video calling feature in beta. There is room for growth from Viber, especially since people are looking for Skype alternatives.

Another Gem in the Kitty

What is Push-to-Talk?
Push-to-Talk, or PTT (or Push-to-Transmit), is not a new technology. Generally speaking, it is a method of having conversations or talking on half-duplex communication lines. Just like a walkie-talkie where momentary button is used to switch from voice reception mode to transmit mode.
Having that in mind, along with the possibilities of Viber as a VoIP application, Viber Media Inc. brought us the same “new” feature, Push-to-Talk. It’s available for iPhone and Android devices in 4.0 version of Viber.

How does Push-to-Talk work in Viber?
It’s a voice message streaming that allows us to speak message instead of typing it. It’s a four step process: record, send, download, play. Viber does all four at the same time.
Push-to-Talk feature works in a two ways: auto-play is automatically active if person on the other end is in Hold & Talk mode. In that case, Viber streams your message as you speak.
To be in Hold & Talk mode means that you are actually in the conversation and Hold & Talk button is displayed on your screen.
