viber : the future

Viber, the popular instant messaging and voice app, expects to double its India subscriber base by the end of 2014, from the 17 million now, driven by opportunities from surging smartphone sales, says country head Anubhav Nayyar.
In an email interview with ET, Nayyar said that the app maker won't be changing any of its basic services post its acquisition by Japanese Internet company Rakuten.
He added that the app, which has already seen 300 million downloads globally, will focus on its paid Stickers and voicecall features for revenue, but won't advertise on the app.
" We do not want to plaster our users with advertisements."

The alternative to skype

Viber is an app for smartphones that allows friends to contact one another. It attempts to be a phone replacement by allowing you to communicate through the app, even if friends aren't using it. Now Viber has released on PC and Mac, but it still requires a smartphone account before you can use it. By using 3G or WiFi, you can communicate through messages or VoIP calls for free with friends who use the app .
But the release of Viber on PC and Mac signals its entry into the domain of Skype, arguably the king of VoIP calls on PC, Mac, and smartphones. With Microsoft's acquisition of Skype, it acts as the replacement of Windows Live Messenger and will add millions of users. Viber was primarily a smartphone app and is only now being offered on desktops with its video calling feature in beta. There is room for growth from Viber, especially since people are looking for Skype alternatives.

Another Gem in the Kitty

What is Push-to-Talk?
Push-to-Talk, or PTT (or Push-to-Transmit), is not a new technology. Generally speaking, it is a method of having conversations or talking on half-duplex communication lines. Just like a walkie-talkie where momentary button is used to switch from voice reception mode to transmit mode.
Having that in mind, along with the possibilities of Viber as a VoIP application, Viber Media Inc. brought us the same “new” feature, Push-to-Talk. It’s available for iPhone and Android devices in 4.0 version of Viber.

How does Push-to-Talk work in Viber?
It’s a voice message streaming that allows us to speak message instead of typing it. It’s a four step process: record, send, download, play. Viber does all four at the same time.
Push-to-Talk feature works in a two ways: auto-play is automatically active if person on the other end is in Hold & Talk mode. In that case, Viber streams your message as you speak.
To be in Hold & Talk mode means that you are actually in the conversation and Hold & Talk button is displayed on your screen.

Multiple Devices, One Platform

Yes, you can!
In fact, you can have it on multiple devices: it can be your computer (no matter if it is Windows, MacOS or Linux based computer), or/and Android tablet. But in order to run Viber on your computer or/and Android tablet, you must first have the application installed and registered to a mobile device.

What does it mean?
I means that, while installing Viber on additional device, you’ll be asked to enter the code which you’ll get in SMS on the registered mobile device. All of your installed Viber applications on different platforms are associated with the same mobile number and therefore are synced. That also means that you can not have the same account on different mobile device. At this stage, one Viber number can be assigned with only one mobile device simultaneously. When you try registering to Viber with the same number on a second mobile device, the first device immediately deactivates, and its data (message history, Recents, etc.) is deleted. What you can do, however, is to register your second mobile device with a different number: your home number, an old cellphone number, family’s or friends… The only requirement is that you are able to receive an activation SMS on it.

Viber Sticker Market

Viber-Sticker-Market-is-now-open
What is Sticker market?
If you want to use a sticker to make a visual statement or just to spice up your conversation, you have to go to the Sticker market. It’s a place where you can find more than 1000 stickers; lot of them are free to download and use, but there are some which you have to pay for. You can find the Sticker Market in the More Options menu of the Viber application or through the ’+‘ icon in the sticker menu.
Currently, the Sticker Market is available as an in-app feature that is supported on Android and iPhone devices only. There is no access to the Sticker Market through Viber for desktop.
Getting a sticker from Sticker market
After entering into the Sticker market you just need to choose a sticker package you want: if you choose a free package it will be automatically downloaded to your device a ready to use. But if you choose a package that needs to pay for, application will guide you through the payment process.
After payment, just like free stickers, it will be downloaded to your device. You can find it your sticker menu: look for the icon with a green star indicating a new sticker package.
Once downloaded, stickers are yours to keep and it won’t expire. And yes, they will sync to your secondary device(s). But if, for some reason, you find that stickers are not synced, just use Refresh icon in stickers menu.
Deleting stickers from Viber
Stickers can be fun to use but there is a catch: once downloaded, stickers can not be removed from Viber. That can be annoying for some users and, at this time, only solution for removing stickers is uninstalling Viber and installing it again. Viber Media Inc. is aware that removing stickers is feature that is missing and they are planning to add it in future versions.
