viber : the future

Viber, the popular instant messaging and voice app, expects to double its India subscriber base by the end of 2014, from the 17 million now, driven by opportunities from surging smartphone sales, says country head Anubhav Nayyar.
In an email interview with ET, Nayyar said that the app maker won't be changing any of its basic services post its acquisition by Japanese Internet company Rakuten.
He added that the app, which has already seen 300 million downloads globally, will focus on its paid Stickers and voicecall features for revenue, but won't advertise on the app.
" We do not want to plaster our users with advertisements."

The alternative to skype

Viber is an app for smartphones that allows friends to contact one another. It attempts to be a phone replacement by allowing you to communicate through the app, even if friends aren't using it. Now Viber has released on PC and Mac, but it still requires a smartphone account before you can use it. By using 3G or WiFi, you can communicate through messages or VoIP calls for free with friends who use the app .
But the release of Viber on PC and Mac signals its entry into the domain of Skype, arguably the king of VoIP calls on PC, Mac, and smartphones. With Microsoft's acquisition of Skype, it acts as the replacement of Windows Live Messenger and will add millions of users. Viber was primarily a smartphone app and is only now being offered on desktops with its video calling feature in beta. There is room for growth from Viber, especially since people are looking for Skype alternatives.

Another Gem in the Kitty

What is Push-to-Talk?
Push-to-Talk, or PTT (or Push-to-Transmit), is not a new technology. Generally speaking, it is a method of having conversations or talking on half-duplex communication lines. Just like a walkie-talkie where momentary button is used to switch from voice reception mode to transmit mode.
Having that in mind, along with the possibilities of Viber as a VoIP application, Viber Media Inc. brought us the same “new” feature, Push-to-Talk. It’s available for iPhone and Android devices in 4.0 version of Viber.

How does Push-to-Talk work in Viber?
It’s a voice message streaming that allows us to speak message instead of typing it. It’s a four step process: record, send, download, play. Viber does all four at the same time.
Push-to-Talk feature works in a two ways: auto-play is automatically active if person on the other end is in Hold & Talk mode. In that case, Viber streams your message as you speak.
To be in Hold & Talk mode means that you are actually in the conversation and Hold & Talk button is displayed on your screen.

Viber Out

Viber Out is a feature that lets you call landline and mobile phones with credits you pre-paid via in-app purchase (or with credit card/Pay Pal for desktop version).  Credits are available in amounts of $4.99, $9,99 or $24,99.

Call rates depends on destination country you’re calling. You can check your call rate on your mobile if you follow the instructions below:

Multiple Devices, One Platform

Yes, you can!
In fact, you can have it on multiple devices: it can be your computer (no matter if it is Windows, MacOS or Linux based computer), or/and Android tablet. But in order to run Viber on your computer or/and Android tablet, you must first have the application installed and registered to a mobile device.

What does it mean?
I means that, while installing Viber on additional device, you’ll be asked to enter the code which you’ll get in SMS on the registered mobile device. All of your installed Viber applications on different platforms are associated with the same mobile number and therefore are synced. That also means that you can not have the same account on different mobile device. At this stage, one Viber number can be assigned with only one mobile device simultaneously. When you try registering to Viber with the same number on a second mobile device, the first device immediately deactivates, and its data (message history, Recents, etc.) is deleted. What you can do, however, is to register your second mobile device with a different number: your home number, an old cellphone number, family’s or friends… The only requirement is that you are able to receive an activation SMS on it.

Viber Sticker Market

Viber-Sticker-Market-is-now-open
What is Sticker market?
If you want to use a sticker to make a visual statement or just to spice up your conversation, you have to go to the Sticker market. It’s a place where you can find more than 1000 stickers; lot of them are free to download and use, but there are some which you have to pay for. You can find the Sticker Market in the More Options menu of the Viber application or through the ’+‘ icon in the sticker menu.
Currently, the Sticker Market is available as an in-app feature that is supported on Android and iPhone devices only. There is no access to the Sticker Market through Viber for desktop.
Getting a sticker from Sticker market
After entering into the Sticker market you just need to choose a sticker package you want: if you choose a free package it will be automatically downloaded to your device a ready to use. But if you choose a package that needs to pay for, application will guide you through the payment process.
After payment, just like free stickers, it will be downloaded to your device. You can find it your sticker menu: look for the icon with a green star indicating a new sticker package.
Once downloaded, stickers are yours to keep and it won’t expire. And yes, they will sync to your secondary device(s). But if, for some reason, you find that stickers are not synced, just use Refresh icon in stickers menu.
Deleting stickers from Viber
Stickers can be fun to use but there is a catch: once downloaded, stickers can not be removed from Viber. That can be annoying for some users and, at this time, only solution for removing stickers is uninstalling Viber and installing it again. Viber Media Inc. is aware that removing stickers is feature that is missing and they are planning to add it in future versions.

No fear

A senior Viber executive said the company doesn't fear WhatsApp voice calls service which is likely to start in the coming months. Viber, an app which competes with WhatsApp, allows users to send text messages, audio and video content and call other Viber contacts using the data connection. It has over 17 million users in India and around 300 million users worldwide.

Anubhuv Nayyar, country head for Viber, said, "When it comes to making calls using data connection in the phone, we have better technology. We are confident that we will offer the most clear and reliable calls using data connection. Other app makers may try to include the same feature in their IM apps but our service will be superior."

WhatsApp, which was recently bought by Facebook in a deal worth $19 billion, has over 450 million users. One of the reasons behind its popularity is the quality of its service. Sending text messages, images files and audio files is almost instantaneous. Even while sharing video files, users don't have to face latency problems. If the WhatsApp voice calls functionality is similar, it is likely to hit Viber hard, which has mostly attracted users because of its call feature.

One stop destination

Founded by American-Israeli entrepreneur Talmon Marco, Viber is another cross platform/VoIPapp that lets users connect with the world freely. The software supports several desktop and mobile platforms, including Android, Mac, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Microsoft Windows, iOS, Series 40, and soon Linux.
Viber offers the best HD quality calls and group messaging sessions for both 3G/4G and Wi-Finetwork users. A boon for emerging markets with low connectivity speeds, Viber promises clear calls even for connections as slow as 8 Kbps. The interface on Windows Phone was also upgraded to allow users place live tiles on their home screens.
Here are a few highlights:
  • No invitations, alias, or registration required. Viber uses phone book data to connect you with existing friends.
  • Offers better quality calls and video messaging using 3G or LTE, although slower data speeds are also supported
  • Free text, video and photo messaging and location sharing
  • Latest update brings in-demand features such as new stickers and emoticons, photo doodles, “seen” status, VoIP calling, message popups
  • Version 3.1 supports Viber desktop application on Mac and Windows
  • Seamless call transfers from phone to desktop, meaning you can make calls to a friend on your desktop without the call getting cut off
  • Multi-language support
  • Syncs with your current mobile device’s contacts
  • 200M users in over 193 countries as of second quarter of 2013
  • The app has some device-specific bugs, though (HTC One and MacBook Air)

2billion- 'i' 'm' possible @ Viber

Competition in the instant messaging space stepped up a gear last month with two significant acquisitions. Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten said Viber, with its 280 million users (100 million active monthly) across 200 countries, would help it penetrate new markets around the world.

In an interview with Bloomberg published recently, Rakuten boss Hiroshi Mikitani spoke for the first time about his hopes for Viber, explaining he wants to see its user base grow to a whopping great two billion. That’s twice as many as what Mark Zuckerberg has planned for WhatsApp.
Before you start spinning your index finger by the side of your head, let’s take a closer look at the figures. According to the Rakuten boss, Viber is currently adding 600,000 new users daily, up from around 550,000 when the deal was announced. And as previously noted, it already has 300 million users signed up.
“The goal is to reach one billion, two billion users, not to stop yet,” Mikitani said. “We’re planning to increase to one million additional users every day. That means 365 million a year.” He said he thinks the messaging app can hit his million-a-day target “maybe in two or three more years.”
While it’s not impossible to imagine Viber at some point hitting a million sign-ups a day.
Rakuten’s CEO said more mergers and acquisitions may be required to reach his lofty goal, suggesting the buyout of rival offerings or app developers whose games and services can be incorporated into Viber, or even the inclusion of more e-commerce features to attract new users.

Viber Buyout

Viber, the Israeli-founded video and voice communications app, has been acquired by Japanese Internet services company Rakuten for $900 million. Rakuten, an electronic commerce and Internet company, is the largest e-commerce site in Japan, and one of the largest in the world.
With Viber, Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani said, his company hopes to expand its e-commerce reach with enhanced communications capabilities. “In the future, e-commerce will become a more communication-based transaction,” Mikitani said. “Live interactivity is going to be critical for all Internet services.”
In a statement, Marco said that Viber would now have access to a large and growing market. “There was a sense that we can accelerate the growth of our company by tapping into Rakuten’s user base in various countries,” Marco said. “We would be able to continue to build Viber, continue to maintain the mentality and speed of a startup while having support.”
The app, that allows users to make free phone and video calls within its network, has over 200 million users all over the world, including many in Arab countries – exceptional for an app that was created in Israel. Although the company is currently based in Cyprus, its R&D center remains in Israel. Viber was released about three years ago and positioned by company CEO Talmon Marco as an alternative to Skype.
Congratulations Rakuten ;-)

The Competition

Viber, wechat & Whatsapp

All 3 messaging apps are supported on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia. However, WeChat has a web app which allows you to send WeChat messages from your browser. Viber also offers cross-platform desktop solutions for both Windows and Mac letting you not only text friends on smartphones but also make calls to them.
I would say Viber is a few steps ahead of WhatsApp and WeChat, in terms of supported platforms.

All 3 apps allow you to send text, photos, videos and location data – ‘basic functions’ as it is also found in other messaging apps. You certainly can have more fun on WeChat as it comes with a wide variety of communication and social features built to expand your networking circles.
Viber and WeChat also support voice calls if you want to make free calls with your friends or family members, however, if you just want to contact your friends via text messaging, WhatsApp will suffice.

It boils down to your needs, if you find yourself changing devices a lot then  Viber keeps it simple by backing up only text (no media) and if you are opting for WhatsApp, we suggest you have a look at their FAQ page for more backup instructions for your OS and device.

As a conclusion, these 3 apps are amazing tools for communication offering more than a regular SMS service, without the need to pay for sending messages. But Viber stands out as its completely free and with a bag full features, it has got to offer more to u then anyone else in the business.

An interesting mix of features @ Viber

The actual functionality varies from platform to platform with iOS and Android being the first to receive new features. Viber includes text, picture and video messaging across all platforms, with voice calling available only to iPhone, Android and Microsoft's Windows Phone although HD voice is planned for Windows Phone 8. The application's user interface includes tab bar on the bottom giving access to messages, recent calls, contact, the keypad and a button for accessing more options. Upon installation, it creates a user account using one's phone number as username. Viber synchronizes with the phone's address book, so users do not need to add contacts in a separate book. Since all users are registered with their phone number, the software returns all Viber users among one's contacts. The version2.3 of Viber had added smileys and other default images. The most interesting thing regarding it is various stickers that it has introduced which are simply awsome. . As of December 2013, Viber Officially launched Viber Out, a feature that allows all users the option to call mobile and landline numbers. Therefore Viber users can call people without the Viber app. Viber Out was originally released in November only to help Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines connect with their loved ones. Doodling is another amazing feature that Viber added to its kitty recently.

Viber : Origins

Viber is a proprietary cross-platform instant messaging voice-over-Internet Protocol application for smartphones developed by Viber Media. In addition to text messaging, users can exchange images, video and audio media messages. It was founded and co-owned by four Israeli partners: Talmon Marco, Igor Megzinik, Sani Maroli and Ofer Smocha. Talmon Marco serves as its CEO.Viber was initially launched for iPhone on December 2, 2010, in direct competition with Skype. A pre-release version for Android appeared in May 2011 but was restricted to 50,000 users; an unrestricted version was released on July 19, 2012. Viber for BlackBerry and Windows Phone devices was launched on May 8, 2012. Initially, the voice calling feature was only available for iPhone and Android applications, with a promise that voice would be added in upcoming versions for Bada, Symbian and Windows Phone applications. On February 13, 2014, Rakuten announced they had acquired Viber for $900 million.
